What Is Gender Expression?
Gender expression refers to how an individual externally demonstrates their gender identity—through choices in clothing, hairstyle, voice, body language, or social mannerisms. It reflects how someone chooses to present their gender to the world, which may or may not align with societal expectations related to masculinity, femininity, or non-binary identities.
How Is Gender Expression Different from Gender Identity?
- Gender identity is an individual’s inner sense of being male, female, both, or neither.
- Gender expression is how that identity is conveyed outwardly.
A person might identify as non-binary but choose to express themselves in a more traditionally masculine or feminine way—or in a way that blends both. How someone presents doesn’t define their identity.
