Gender Identity

What Is Gender Identity?

Gender identity refers to an individual’s own deeply held sense of their gender—whether that is male, female, non-binary, genderqueer, or another identity. It exists internally and is separate from the sex assigned at birth or how someone may choose to express their gender outwardly.

How Gender Identity Differs from Gender Expression

While gender identity is one’s internal experience and understanding of their gender, gender expression describes how a person represents that identity to others—through clothing, speech, behaviour, or appearance. A person’s gender expression may or may not align with their internal identity.

Why Gender Identity Matters
  • Basic recognition of self: Helps individuals feel validated in who they are, fostering mental well-being.
  • Inclusive workplace environments: Respecting each person’s gender identity helps build trust, safety, and belonging.
  • Equity and fairness: Understanding that identity is diverse allows organisations to support all employees equally.
  • Legal and ethical responsibility: Treating gender identity correctly aligns with many equality and anti-discrimination standards.
Common Gender Identity Terms
  • Cisgender: Whose gender identity matches the sex allocated to them at birth.
  • Transgender: Whose gender identity differs from their assigned sex at birth.
  • Non-binary / Genderqueer: Individuals who don’t identify exclusively as male or female. Their identity may be a blend, outside, or fluid between genders.

These are just a few terms; gender identity exists on a broad and evolving spectrum.

Supporting Gender Identity in Organisations

Employers and colleagues can make a positive difference by:

  • Respecting and using each person’s chosen name and pronouns
  • Providing options for gender-neutral facilities or restrooms
  • Including gender identity in diversity policies and anti-discrimination protections
  • Offering awareness and training to foster understanding and reduce assumptions
  • Ensuring medical, leave, and payroll systems can accommodate diverse identities

Small steps like updating systems or inclusive communication send a strong message of acceptance.
