Equity

What is Equity?

Equity in the workplace refers to the fair treatment of all employees, ensuring that individuals receive what they need to succeed — not necessarily giving everyone the same thing, but addressing barriers that might prevent some from having equal opportunities. Unlike equality, which treats everyone the same, equity acknowledges individual differences and seeks to level the playing field.

Equity vs Equality

While the terms are often used interchangeably, equity and equality are not the same:

  • Equality: Gives everyone the same resources or opportunities.
  • Equity: Provides individuals with the specific tools and support they need based on their unique circumstances.

For example, giving every employee the same training resources is equality. Tailoring training to match different learning needs or language proficiencies is equity.

Why is Equity Important at Work?

Creating an equitable workplace is vital for:

  • Inclusive hiring practices: Ensuring that candidates from diverse backgrounds are fairly considered.
  • Fair pay and promotion: Addressing wage gaps and ensuring career growth is based on merit, not bias.
  • Employee engagement: People who feel seen and supported are more likely to stay, contribute, and thrive.

It builds trust and fosters a culture where all employees — regardless of gender, ethnicity, ability, or background — feel valued and supported.

Examples of Equity in the Workplace
  • Offering assistive tools or flexible hours to employees with disabilities
  • Providing mentorship programmes for underrepresented groups
  • Reviewing and adjusting salaries to close gender or caste-based wage gaps
  • Allocating learning and development budgets based on employee needs
Equity in HR and Compliance

From an HR and compliance standpoint, equity also plays a role in:

  • Policy-making: Ensuring rules don’t unintentionally favour one group over another
  • Performance reviews: Removing unconscious bias through structured and transparent appraisal systems
  • Recruitment: Writing inclusive job descriptions and using blind screening processes to avoid discrimination
How Can Companies Promote Equity?

To embed equity in the workplace, companies should:

  • Audit existing policies and practices for bias
  • Collect feedback and data from employees to identify inequities
  • Offer targeted support for employees from marginalised backgrounds
  • Provide training for managers on inclusive leadership
  • Make equity a part of organisational goals and culture
